CHAPTER 2 – Thelma & Lou:
A Circular Love Story
Surprised that seeing Thelma again brought out such emotion in me was a throwback to what had attracked me to her all those years ago. She was attractive, smart, responsible, and classy---the same qualities that had always captivated me about her, especially since the women I'd dated after our divorce came up short. I wondered if there was really a possibility for us to try again, since we were in our sixties. Was it too late? Did we miss our window for happiness?
I had all the freedom I had ever wanted during the years apart, and realized what I lost by divorcing Thelma. The many women I dated and the one I married didn't fill the void in my life, even though I thought the "fast lane" was what I wanted. Thinking about all of this after meeting Thelma again, I had to figure out a plan. After all, I was a good and shrewd businessman for over forty years, had been a master sergeant in the Army leading my men through some terrible ordeals, and always came out on top. I charted my course, pursued it, and succeeded all my life - except in the area of marriage. Twice divorced wasn't exactly a calling card in the relationship arena.

CHAPTER 1 – The Ultimatum – Stefanie Miller, August before junior year
“Where is this coming from?” I wailed. “Are you kidding me? Why is this an issue?”
“So, Stefanie, you will not be able to go back to school because I will cut you off. You’ll be on your own to pay your tuition, books, food, and personal expenses if you continue this madness with your boyfriend,” dictated my father as he pounded his fist on the table.
My mother entered the den and tried to calm the waters. “I don’t feel the same way, sweetheart, but your father has made himself very clear, and he is in charge of the money,” she added.
“Your mother and I made a mistake by being polite and gracious to Paul—I guess we gave him the wrong message. You both interpreted our hospitality as acceptance of your relationship. You and Paul come from completely different backgrounds. And by no means do I want you to continue with him; you know how strongly against interfaith marriage I am—however, it’s your decision based on the ultimatum I’m giving you, Stefanie,” my dad barked.
“You’re forcing my hand, and I hate you for doing this,” I yelled as I stormed out of the room, crying.
